The World of GDPR Part One. Who is talking about it, what are they saying and who is influencing the conversation.

Article written by Jason Sibley.

If you are in a marketing or sales function you are hopefully aware of the new the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) coming next year (2018).

It's designed to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU). It also addresses the export of personal data outside the EU (for the US see Privacy Shield, I'll cover this in another blog).

The primary objectives of the GDPR are to give control back to citizens and residents over their personal data.

The regulation was adopted on 27 April 2016. It becomes enforceable from 25 May 2018 after a two-year transition period and, unlike a directive, it does not require any enabling legislation to be passed by national governments and is thus directly binding and applicable.

This is one of the most disruptive laws in the world of sales and marketing. If you're not aware, then you should get up to speed, as the non-compliance fines can be as high as 4% of your turnover. It's huge.

So this is the first in a regular series of updates on what's happening in the world of GDPR. What the hot topics are, who is driving and influencing the conversation and any changes or examples of application.

To start, we looked at the type of people talking about GDPR.

We found over 40k people talking about GDPR in the last month, and we've broken them down into 10 behavioral cohorts.

You can see that there is a real mix of Marketing, Security, Legal, Privacy and Vendors engaging in this conversation. In later blogs, we'll deep dive into some of these communities, but in this post, we'll cover them as a total group.

Something interesting to look at is what Hashtags they use in their posts. This will help you follow along, or even engage.

The colours directly relate to the cohort names above. So Cybersecurity guys use #Infosec, but also are talking about #GDPR (as an example).

Who are the Influencers (on the topic GDPR)?

That's the top 9 (from an identified list of 951) - to help you engage, I've created a twitter list you can follow - https://twitter.com/jasoncreation/lists/GDPRSuperstars

Who are the influencers on the people talking about GDPR?

The above looks at the influencers on the topic, this list here shows the people that influence the influencers, so of all those talking about GDPR - where do they get their info from.

Icons look nice, but don't really help you a lot so here is the top 25. If you'd like the full list please just email me - [email protected]
